Daredevil:
It's Valentine's night which also happens to be my wedding anniversary night and I am watching Daredevil with my missus, what a woman! How many women will allow that on this night of all nights? I only wish the film wasn't such a stinker for her sake!
Synopsis: Matt Murdock is blinded as a kid but in the accident his other senses are enhanced to a superhuman degree, he decides to use his new skills to fight for justice. Lawyer by day, Vigilante by night, Daredevil takes on the Kingpin of crime and his assassin Bullseye with his new love Elektra caught in the middle.
| Director : | Mark Steven Johnson |
| Starring : | Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell, Micheal Duncun Clarke and Joe Pantiolio |

| The first of three superhero movies to hit the big screen this year and it is such a disappointment. This film had all the ingredients but they must have been added in the wrong order and proportion. Funnily enough Ben Affleck as Matt Murduck is not the problem as I first thought it would be. | |

The most annoying thing about this movie for me was the action scenes, apart from two sequences, the fight sequences were very hard to follow and mostly a blur of loud noise and flashing pictures! Not watchable at all, the only watchable fight sequence was when they were not wearing costumes! For an action film not to get the action right is not good! In this film the curse of CGI strikes again, I do not understand why people think they have to always use CGI to depict an acrobatic character. In this film Daredevils movements at time reminded me of Spider-man. Daredevil is a guy who has the agility of a normal person who is well trained, surely there are stunt-men who could have pulled this off with at most the use of wire-fu and not CGI. The script borrows heavily from the best period in Daredevil's history and tries to cram it all in one movie which really I think is a mistake as there is too much going on and a lot of the characters are not fully realized due to time constraints. A lot of the events in this movie strain credulity to breaking point and my missis kept groaning at all the contrived scenes, a few examples are given below, if you do not want to read any spoilers please look away now. 1. When Matt Murdock first meets Elektra they start fighting for no reason, and in full view of everyone this supposedly blind famous lawyer is busting some funky ninja moves, and all because he wanted her phone number? 2. Daredevil tries to say Elekra's dad from Bullseye and fails and even though Elekra is witnessing this she somehow jumps to the wrong conclusion that it is Daredevil that actually killed her Dad. 3. Elektra only changes her mind about the death of her father when she finds out that Daredevil is Matt Murdock, why would this change her mind? If this was me this would only make me more suspicious. |

4. for a so called Kingpin of crime he seems quite eager to go one on one with Daredevil and in addition why would the cops come looking for the Kingpin anyway, there is no link to him apart from Bullseye who would have no reason to give him up anyway. Now lets talk about the perfomances, the best performance for me comes from Jennifer Garner, she surprised me as I thought she was going to mess up the Elekra role badly but she is easily the best thing about this movie and I only wished there was more time given to develop her role and there should have been more showcasing of her skills. She was good in a cameo in Catch me if you can and now a star turn here, there may be big things ahead for her. Next up his Ben Affleck himself who does an okay job as Matt Murdock and Daredevil, nothing special but an adequate performance. I only wished they showcased more of his lawyer skills. Micheal Clarke Duncan was a good Kingpin, at times he nailed him to a T but there were the occasional scenes that did not seem in character for a Kingpin to me, especially when he gets his rear-end handed to him by Daredevil, I thought he was going to cry for a moment! Joe Pantiolio's role really was a total throw away, what a waste of a great actor! David Keith who played Matt Murdock's dad was excellent in the role, also the kid who plays Tony Soprano's son had a bit part as a bully in this movie and he was excellent!! Now let's talk about Colin Farrell, while I actually liked the look of his Bullseye and at times he had some priceless lines like saying "I want a costume" a lot of the times he went OTT in his mannerisms. I think he slipped over that fine line that separates playing a psycho from being a prat, my missus absolutely hated him in the movie. Most people who are not into comics like this geek will see this movie as a poor attempt at ripping of the Spider-Man movie an some of the people who have watched this actually pointed out 4 to 5 scenes which they believe were directly lifted from Spider-Man. Let's hope that this is the only dud out of the superhero movies this year. This movie scores a unsuperheroic 4/10 See ya later, Shazam! |
