Quentin Tarantino is a sick sick man. I grew up on martial arts film just like Tarantino, I remember Bruce Lee, I remember Jackie Chan, I remember David Carradine and I even remember Sonny Chiba just like Tarantino but unlike Tarantino my knowledge of this genre does not extend much past this. QT however will tell you who the director of "Monkey in the Snakes shadow" was, he will tell you who choreographed the fights, he'll probably tell you who the props man was and he can probably do this for all obscure martial art films.

What I am trying to say is that While I am a bit of geek for many things, QT is a supergeek in almost all things! In this film his geekiness shines through.
This film will only appeal to certain types of people, the violence is unrelenting and well over the top and a few of the girls around me had their eyes closed for a lot of it, wusses.
Not to make any bones about it I liked it well enough, there were parts that I thought slowed the whole movie down a bit but when the action starts you forget about all that. This movie tries to be cool and in large chunks manages to accomplish it.

QT uses different styles in the filming of this movie including Anime and in a particular sequence switched to black and white. The black and white sequence did not work for me but the anime sequence worked fine and since the whole movie is full of cartoonish violence anyway it fitted right in.

The plot is kept simple, this is a revenge movie in the purest form and it basically follows Uma Thurman's character the Bride AKA Black Mamba while she goes through a checklist of people to kill.
In this movie we get to see Uma start on this revenge trail which starts with Copperhead (Vivica A. Fox) and climaxes with Coppermouth (Lucy Liu).

The climatic battle scene is about 30 minutes long and is worth the price of admission itself.
I'm sure you've all seen pictures or clips of Uma in a yellow tracksuit taking on what seems to be hundreds of masked goons, well nothing you have seen will prepare you for the actual brutality of this sequence, take my word for it.

Despite this for me the best fight sequence was actually Coppermouth (Vivica Fox) versus The Bride (Uma Thurman), this was brutal and totally believable, I loved it!

Sonny Chiba a legend of old Samurai films has a part in this film and it was surprisingly one of the few funny and warm moments in the film.

Who was that Japanese girl in the school uniform? She was evil personified, what an actress! (and no it has nothing to do with the uniform!). Looking at the picture above again, I am pretty sure now that she was also in Battle Royale but I'll have to check that.

Overall I enjoyed this film even though sometimes I thought the soundtrack was too loud.
My main problem with this film is the decision by the studio and director to split the original film into two separate parts, why? and if they had to do it why do we have to wait for three months for the next part?!
The powers that be should have made a gesture to the fans to show they are not just ripping us by charging half price for the second film at least. The DVD better have the film recombined into one!

I would give this first volume of Kill Bill a gory 8/10.
