The whole idea of this movie is to bring together popular characters from literature and have them interact together.

We have Mycroft Holmes from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books, Mina Harker from Bram Stoker's Dracula, H.Rider Haggard's Allan Quatermien, H.G. Wells' Invisible Man, Jules Verne's Capt. Nemo, Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray, R.L. Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde and not to forget the American contribution of Tom Sawyer.

With this collection of greats from literature this should have been a classic high brow movie, let me say it straight out this film disappoints big time!

This could have been so good it hurts to watch all that potential wasted. There are glimpses of greatness throughout the film but it never raises above that.

I have read the comic that this movie is based on and the comic is ten times better than this movie.
Some of the changes made for the movie make absolutely no sense at all!

To start of why the addition of Tom Sawyer? This is just to appease a generation of MTV Americans who will not probably recognize any of the other literary characters, it is compromises like this that spell the end of any cult status that this film may have had.

Also why does Capt.Nemo all of a sudden have to be a Jet Li wannabe? Another concession to the MTV brigade.

The film's action sequences are poorly edited and barely watchable, the plot seems ridiculous and utterly dumbed down for nitwits.

As I said the film does have a few good bits, I did not mind the decision to make Mina Harker an actual vampire but then why is she immune to the sun??

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde transformation is actually quite good and also Capt.Nemo's ship is quite impressive with a good set of gadgets.

How I wish this film wasn't made and that Alan Moore the writer of the comic was a director, this could have been the Memento of comic films.

I give thee a paltry and distinctly unextraordinary 4/10.
