Reign of Fire :
I like dragons and always have, they are great mythical beasts and I find them more exciting than dinosaurs, bearing this in mind I was looking forward to seeing this movie and hoping to see great scenes of dragons fighting men. The film turned out not to be an instant classic but not very far off. This gets a very unshabby 7/10
Synopsis: Dragons have been awakened and they have laid waste to the world, 20 years later some heroes emerge and they decide it's time to take the earth back.
| Director : | Rob Bowman |
| Starring : | Christian Bale, Matthew Mcconaughey |
Positives :
1. Dragon slayers! Hardnosed american commandos, cynical tough english men and the fiery beasts themselves. What is their not to love about this?
2. This is a welcome change from the overabundance of CGI effects and absence of human drama in most recent Fantsy films. Do not get me wrong there are CGI effects in the movie and they are good ones at that, but it is mixed with good story telling, lots of drama and lots of alpha male posing. This reminded me of a contest to find the hardest men in town, ignore anybody who says that the acting was over the top that is exactly what this film needed.
3. The scene of the commondos dive bombing a dragon were absolute heaven.
4. The dragons were literally a force of a nature in this movie and were well depicted as such..
5. I liked the slighty washed feel to the film giving it a newsreel feel. Matthew Mcconaughey was quite good as the hardnosed commando and Bale as the cynical english man.
Negatives :
1. The ending could have been a little bit less conventional, with a little bit of thought this could have made this more of classic.
2. A bit more footage of Europe being decimated would have made a bit more impact especially to see London burn, in the film most of the destruction of Europe is only shown as a quick memory flash back We should have seen the Dragons go up against a few F16's !
3. Quite a bit of mumbling made me miss out on some of the dialogue in the movie but that is what DVD is for! Otherwise the sound was quite good especially on those dragon flyby's.
I normally hate post apocalyptic films but this was one I enjoyed, how come seeing London in ruins was a major rush for me? Maybe there is something twisted in me? I felt the adrenaline rush while watching this film and at times could not resist grinning like an a$$.
Oh by the way it's nice to see Doctor bashir from Star Trek Deep Space nine
sinking his teeth into a "meaty" role in this film ![]()
See ya later,
Shazam!
