Signs:

Synopsis: Crop circles are appearing in fields around the world, are they real or just the work of hoaxers?

Director : M.Night Shyamalan (MNS)
Starring : Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin

I am going to do this review a bit differently from my normal breakdown into positive's and negatives and see how it goes.

This is M.Night Shyamalan's third film and for me it's a hat trick of superb films.

Nobody builds suspense than this director, for what in reality is nothing more than a film based primarily in one house with four people it manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire film.

It is the story of a backwater reverend Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) who has lost his faith and now is content to run his farm and raise his kids. Faith runs strongly as a theme throughout this film, we are shown how people with faith or without faith deal differently with potential and actual disasters.

The acting is topnotch throughout the film and Rory Culkin younger brother of McCauley was a delight as one of Hess' two children.

**Spoilers alert** if you do not mind knowing what happens in the movie then highlight the blank space below to reveal some spoilers :

We have all seen the movies where aliens invade Earth and the heroes, the government or some secret agency go up against them and manage to turn them back, well in this film all this happens off-screen and we are not privy to it. What you have in this film is the answer to how do these events affect the ordinary people.

One of the most memorable scenes is when Joaquin takes on an alien, this is one of the best alien Vs human scenes in movie history and I dare anyone to choose a better one.

Two of the minor quibbles I had with this movie is one how the character played by Shyamalan manages to capture one of the aliens and subsequently he and Mel Gibson just leave it locked up in a pantry and do not inform anyone in authority, secondly the aliens seemed ill prepared for an invasion, I mean where was all the high tech gear?

MNS's ability to shoot scenes is excellent and the scene mentioned in the spoiler above is just an example of his genius, MNS is a one man show on this movie he not only produces, directs and wrote the movie he also acts in it taking a small but pivotal role in the movie.

In closing this is an excellent movie, there are no loud explosions and over the top action sequences as expected of any summer blockbuster but what this film has going for it is a very well written story of suspense and human drama. Unlike most summer films this one requires the presence or your brain.

My movie rating is : 8/10
